History of the Department
The Department of Scandinavian Studies (30.10.2000-31.01.2005 the Department of Scandinavian and Baltic Studies) became an independent unit of the Faculty of Modern Languages in 1984. Until then one could study Scandinavian languages at the Institute of German Studies. First students for the full, five-year programme in Swedish and Norwegian were enrolled in 1974, and in Danish and Finnish the following year. The programme in Lithuanian was launched in 1988 (at the Institute of Linguistics) and in Latvian in 2003. Staring with 1.02.2005 Baltic (Lithuanian and Latvian) and Finnish studies are part of the Institute of Linguistics.
Profile and Organisation of Studies
A Master’s Degree (tytuł magistra) in arts can be obtained in the following areas: Danish, Norwegian and Swedish after five years of full-time language studies. Students of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are enrolled every year or every other year. In the academic year 2008/2009, besides the first-year students of Norwegian and Danish, the Department of Scandinavian Studies comprises 2nd year of Swedish and Norwegian, 3rd year of Danish and Swedish, 4th year of Danish and Norwegian, and 5th year of Swedish and Norwegian.
Students of the above specializations can also attend courses in methodology of teaching English / German, psychology and pedagogy, etc. There are 170 students of Scandinavian languages at the University in the academic year 2008/2009.

There are 20 academic teachers currently employed at the Department of Scandinavian Studies: 4 professors (Maria Krysztofiak-Kaszyńska, Witold Maciejewski, Eugeniusz Rajnik, Grzegorz Skommer), 10 research workers with PhD degrees, 3 senior lecturers (of which 2 hold PhD degrees), 2 lecturers, and 2 contract lecturers (from Denmark and Sweden). There are also 7 post-graduate students.
