In 1993, the Jan De Ploey Prize was established to further research in the field of process geomorphology. This prize is awarded every two years to a young scientist (under the age of 35 years) who has made a significant contribution to research in the field of geomorphological processes. Previous prize winners were R. Allison in 1993 and Y. Le Bissonnais in 1995. This prize will be awarded for the third time at the Fourth International Association of Geomorphologists Conference in Bologna, Italy, 28 August - 3 September 1997. The recipient will be expected to deliver a memorial lecture at the Laboratory for Experimental Geomorphology at Leuven. The prize will pay the expenses of the visit to Leuven and the residual sum may be used to support attendance at an appropriate international conference.Nominations should consist of a brief statement and any supporting materials (c.v., list of publications), including at least a copy of one critical paper. Please send your nomination before 31 March 1997 to

IAG News
- The President of the IGU, Professor Bruno Messerli, has requested that Professor Olav Slaymaker, in his capacity as President-elect of the IAG, serve as contact person for the IGU Executive Committee with the four geomorphological commissions of the IGU. The commissions and relevant chairs are: C1. Climate change and periglacial environments (Professor J. Vandenberghe), C10. Geomorphological response to environmental change (Professor A. Imeson), C13. Land degradation and desertification (Professor M. Sala), C21. Sustainable development and management of karstic terrain (Professor J. Gunn). The objective of this request is to strengthen the collaboration between the IGU and the IAG . It is expected that the contact person will report annually to the IGU Executive on basis of information exchanged between IGU Commission Chairs and the contact person.
- The Association of Slovak Geomorphologists (ASG) came into existence on 5 December 1996 under the Presidency of Dr Milos Stankoviansky. Dr Stankoviansky is well known in the international geomorphological community and we send our warm congratulations to him and to the new association which already has 22 members.
- The IAG has been successful in competition for a research grant from ICSU-SC/IDNDR. The research project, designed by Dr Hans Kienholz (Switzerland), is entitled Documentation of Mountain Disasters (DOMODIS) and will be implemented under the aegis of the IAG. A workshop to bring together interested parties is being planned for 1997, and you may wish to write to Dr Kienholz to indicate your interest in being kept informed as plans evolve.
- Dr Dario Trombotto has confirmed the interest of the GAG (Argentinean Geomorphological Group) in organising the IAG Regional Conference for 1999.
