1. Computerised learner corpus (CLC): a ‘special’ type of corpus.
"By providing more accurate descriptions of the English language, computer corpora have greatly benefited the EFL sector. The Collins Cobuild Database, for instance, has given rise to an extensive family of new EFL publications, including dictionaries, grammars and coursebooks. However one should not exaggerate the impact of native corpora on foreign language teaching. Having access to comprehensive frequency lists may well help course designers compile better lexical syllabi, but it will not give them access to learners’ actual lexical problems.
One of the best ways of ensuring that learners’ needs are fully understood and met is to focus on their actual output, a fact now recognised by linguists and publishers who have accordingly started to compile computerised learner corpora." (Granger 1994: 25)
