Vertigo (Vertigo) pusilla O.F. MÜLLER, 1774Shell: Sinistrous, whorls 4.5-5.2, most often 5.0. Shape ovate, short to strongly elongate, spire tapered. Whorls moderately convex, suture moderately deep. Aperture distinctly heart-shaped, with a deep palatal incision. Teeth 6-9: columellar, fold-like; parietal and angular, both high lamellate; upper and lower palatal; basal, knob-shaped, of variable size; and infraparietal, 1-2 suprapalatals. Umbilicus open, deep. Surface sculpture of irregular striae. Shell semitransparent, light: uniformly yellowish- to goldish-brown, teeth slightly lighter.Dimensions: Height 1.60-2.20 mm, breadth 1.00-1.20 mm, aperture height 0.43-0.58 mm, aperture breadth 0.50-0.68, body whorl height 1.00-1.23. Ecology: A mesophile, inhabiting woodlands and half-open habitats: mixed and deciduous forests, shaded rocks and stone walls, rarely old parks, shrubs and margins of humid or moderately humid meadows; sporadically even in alder fens or periodically flooded, wooded lake shores. Distribution: A European species, inhabiting greatest part of Europe: in the north to 68° in Norway, 60° in Finland and the European part of the Russia, 66°50' in Sweden, in the west to Ireland, in the east to the river Volga. In Southern Europe recorded from Iberian Peninsula, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria and Crimea. In Poland rather common in all the studied regions, in the mountains up to 1500 m a.s.l. |
