Columella aspera WALDÉN, 1966

Shell: Dextrous. Shape cylindric-conical, relatively stouter than in C. edentula. Up to 6 whorls. Whorls strongly convex, suture deep. Aperture outline semicircular, only exceptionally - in specimens with slightly less convex whorls - slightly squarish. Umbilicus deep, open. Surface sculpture of strong, distinct and regular striae. Colour brown of various intensity, often with a reddish tint; shells of living animals have a greyish hue.
Dimensions: Maximum height: 2.28-2.40 mm, maximum breadth: 1.38-1.43 mm.
Ecology: Usually avoiding calacareous habitats; deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests, also poor acid grassland. In summer often climbing Vaccinium spp. and ferns. In Poland pine and mixed forests, climbing Dryopteris filix-mas, Athyrium filix-femina and Vaccinium myrtillus.
Distribution: Most probably European: recorded from Denmark, common in Sweden (to 66°) and Norway (to 74°04'); Netherlands, Germany, Finland, British Isles, Valdai Upland in the Russia. Found also on Madeira. In Poland recorded to date from 22 localities but probable more common.
