Years before the release of his debut album on Verve, Nicholas
Payton put the jazz world on notice that a new flamboyant trumpet
virtuoso had risen in its midst. He has been the topic of
conversation amongst members of the jazz community since he was in
his mid-teens. Nicholas has been a fixture at the Jazz at Lincoln
Center programs and has recorded with Elvin Jones in addition to
touring with Elvin, Marcus Roberts and Clark Terry.
On this recording, Nicholas makes his presense felt immediately
with his large and powerful sound, and an intensity and fervor
unmatched by any jazz trumpeter. There are Payton originals, well
known tunes from the jazz repertoire, tender ballads, latin grooves
and straight ahead, hard swinging jazz.
